'Too many Republican leaders are lying to America': Rep. Ken Buck says he won't seek re-election
November 01, 2023
Republican Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, who has served in Congress since 2015, has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2024.
During an appearance on MSNBC, Buck said that will not pursue re-election. He also shared a video in which he discussed the decision.
"Too many Republican leaders are lying to America, claiming that the 2020 election was stolen, describing January 6th as an unguided tour ... and asserting that the ensuing prosecutions are a weaponization of our justice system," he declared in the video.
"It is impossible for the Republican Party to confront our problems and offer a course correction for the future while being obsessively fixated on retribution and vengeance for contrived injustices of the past," Buck said in the video. "The Republican Party of today, however, is ignoring self-evident truths about the rule of law and limited government in exchange for self-serving lies. I made a decision to leave Congress because tough votes are being replaced by social media status."
Buck was one of the eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the House speakership last month. Then, during the first three rounds of balloting to fill the speakership slot, Buck voted against GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. Later during the fourth round of voting, Buck and other Republicans voted for Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), who won the role of House speaker.
"I voted for Rep. Johnson because of his unwavering dedication to conservative principles, his willingness to tackle tough issues, and because he is the right candidate to bring this Republican conference together again," Buck said in a statement. "Our top priorities are responsibly funding the government, securing our border, and addressing inflation. I look forward to working with Speaker Johnson to create a focused Congress that will achieve those goals and deliver results to the American people."
